St Albans has its fair share of claims to fame stretching back to Roman Britain–it was the Empire’s third-largest city in the country and to this day holds what may have been the only Roman theatre of its kind in the British Isles. In more recent history, it is especially steeped in the history of baking–with a popular theory suggesting the modern hot cross bun was first invented here by a monk in the 14th Century, at the time called the “Alban bun”.
